DIY Floral Arrangements: Crafting Professional-Looking Bouquets at Home

Even though you receive your Petal&Post posy pre-arranged and almost ready for the vase, you can still use some of this D.I.Y. guide to play around with your new Posy. Creating your own stunning floral arrangement starts with having a combination of flowers and foliage. The key is to think in three parts: focal flowers, filler flowers, and greenery.

Focal flowers

These are your star players – the show-stopping blooms that capture attention. Choose large, impressive flowers in an odd number for the most visually appealing effect.

Petal&Post favourites: Proteas, stocks, ornamental kale, sunflowers, roses and hydrangeas.

Filler flowers

These smaller, delicate flowers add texture and fill in gaps between your focal flowers. They help create a cohesive, natural look.

Petal&Post favourites: Alstromeria, limonium, carnations, snapdragons and chrysanthemums.

Greenery

Foliage is the foundation of your arrangement, providing shape, depth, and a vibrant green backdrop that makes the other flowers pop.

Petal&Post favourites: Pennygum, solidaster and limonium.

At Petal&Post, all our posies designs are guided by this rule, making it easy to jump straight into playing with the different arrangement styles that compliment your Petal&Post Posy.

Flower Arranging for the Modern Home

Modern floral arrangements break away from traditional conventions of symmetry and uniformity by emphasizing bold colors, unique textures, and asymmetric designs. Our Posies are best suited to these kind of arrangements; bursting with colour and seasonal blooms.

A more minimalist arrangement would focus on a few key elements, such as a single type of flower or a monochrome color palette, for a sleek, contemporary look. Our Rose Box is perfect for this; one single type of beautiful flower.

Another way to style our Posies is in a vase – trimmed so that they aren’t too tall (depending on your vase size). Our Weekly Posies are ready to be trimmed, and styled however you like, in your vase.

For more of a hand-tied looking arrangement; A casual, freshly-picked style where flowers and fillers are gathered by hand and tied with a ribbon – this is how our Weekly Posies come, ready to be gifted or popped into a vase.

Step-By-Step Arrangement Guide

  1. Build a support structure: For a wide-mouthed vase, create a grid across the opening with floral tape (or just normal sticky tape if it’s all you have) to help hold stems in place.
  2. Establish the base with greenery: Start by adding your greenery stems first, inserting them into the grid or crossing them to create a foundational structure. This establishes the overall height and shape of your arrangement.
  3. Add focal flowers: Insert your largest, most eye-catching blooms next. Place them at varying heights and slightly off-center to create visual interest.
  4. Incorporate secondary flowers: Place your medium-sized blooms around the focal flowers to complement them and help transition the eye through the arrangement.
  5. Fill in with filler flowers: Add smaller blooms and textural accents last to fill any gaps, cover mechanics, and add lightness and movement.
  6. Refine and adjust: Spin your vase to view the arrangement from all angles and make final adjustments. Trim any stems or foliage as needed to create a polished and balanced look.
